Dog Park Etiquette In Denver, Colorado

Dog parks in Denver are meant to be enjoyed by all dog owners, and for that to happen, some simple etiquette needs to be followed:

•Make sure your dog is healthy (and up to date on all vaccinations) before going to a dog park.

•Clean up after your dog immediately. No one else is going to do it, and the most prevalent complaint about dog parks is the presence of poop.

•Supervise your dog, at all times, while in the dog park. It’s fine to chat with other dog owners, but just like a parent, you need to keep your eye on your charge at all times.

•Stay close to your dog while you’re in the dog park, so that if issues arise, you can intervene immediately. Just because you’re in an enclosed area doesn’t, this mean that your attention can drift.

•Small dogs (dogs under 25 pounds) should be watched even more closely and/or confined to specific “small dog” areas, which are available at some Denver area dog parks.

•Train your dog before going to a Denver dog park. Make sure your dog can obey basic commands such as “sit” and “come.”

•Don’t let your dog jump on strangers, and don’t bring your dog to a dog park if your dog is aggressive (toward other dogs or people).

•Don’t discipline other dogs. Instead, catch the attention of the dog’s owner and address the problem.

•Dogs can sometimes play rough (all while having fun), but watch that your dog doesn’t start bullying other dogs.

•Don’t feed other dogs treats without their owners’ permission. A dog may be allergic to certain treats and/or on a special diet.

•If you bring children with you to the dog park, teach them to ask permission before playing with another dog.

•Don’t bring a dog in heat to the dog park (and only spayed and neutered dogs are allowed at the six Denver dog parks set up by Denver Parks and Recreation).

In addition to the dog park etiquette listed above, you’re required to follow Denver dog park rules.
